My Roku TV turns ON, but there is No Video

If your TCL Roku TV powers on, but the screen is black or blank and you cannot see the Roku Home screen or any menu, follow the steps below in order. This can help identify whether the issue is caused by power, the selected input, a connected device, or the TV display itself.

Step 1: Confirm the TV has power and is responding

First, make sure the TV is receiving power and responding to commands.

  • Check the status light on the front of the TV.
Light behavior can vary by model, but the TV should normally show some sign of power when plugged in.
  • Try pressing Power, Home, or Volume on the Roku remote.
If the TV is receiving the command, you may notice the status light blink or change.

If there is no sign of power:

  • Make sure the power cord is securely connected to the TV.
  • Plug the TV into a known working wall outlet.
  • For troubleshooting, plug the TV directly into the wall and do not use a power strip or surge protector.

Step 2: Check the selected input

A black screen can happen if the TV is on an input with no active signal.

  • Press the Input button on the remote, if available, or use the TV’s physical button to cycle through the available inputs.
  • Check each input one at a time, such as HDMI 1, HDMI 2, HDMI 3, or AV.

If you have an external device connected, such as a cable box, game console, streaming player, or Blu-ray player:

  • Make sure the device is powered on.
  • Unplug and reconnect the HDMI cable on both ends.
  • Try a different HDMI port on the TV.
  • If available, try a different HDMI cable.

Step 3: Disconnect all external devices

A connected device can sometimes prevent the TV from displaying properly.

  • Turn the TV off.
  • Disconnect all external devices from the TV.
  • Turn the TV back on.
  • Press the Home button on the Roku remote.

If the Roku Home screen appears after disconnecting the devices, reconnect them one at a time to identify which device is causing the issue.

Step 4: Power cycle the TV

A full power cycle can clear temporary issues that may cause a blank screen.

  • Turn the TV off.
  • Unplug the TV from the power outlet.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • While the TV is unplugged, press and hold the TV’s physical Power button for 10 to 15 seconds, if your model has one.
  • Plug the TV back in and turn it on again.

Tip: Depending on the model, the physical power button is often located under the TCL logo on the bottom edge of the TV, or on the back or side of the TV.

Step 5: Check for a very dim picture

In some cases, the TV may still be producing an image, but the backlight is not working. This can make the screen appear completely black.

  • Turn the TV on.
  • In a dark room, shine a flashlight at the screen from a few inches away.
  • Look closely for a faint image, shapes, or menu elements.

What this means:

  • If you see a faint image: the TV may have a backlight-related issue.
  • If you do not see any image at all: continue to the next step.

Step 6: Try to open the Roku Home screen

This helps determine whether the issue is related to an external input or the TV itself.

  • Press the Home button on the Roku remote several times.
  • Wait a few seconds between presses.
  • Watch the screen carefully to see whether the Roku Home screen appears.

What this means:

  • If the Home screen appears: the issue may be related to the selected input or a connected device.
  • If the Home screen does not appear: continue to the next step.

Step 7: Check for sound

This can help confirm whether the TV is turning on normally but not displaying a picture.

  • Press Volume Up on the remote.
  • Listen for any sound from the TV.
  • If you hear audio but do not see a picture, the issue may be related to the display or backlight.
