Use Ambient Display on your TCL QM9K TV

If your TV has a presence sensor, you can use the Ambient Display setting. This turns your TV into an interactive display to make it an even more integral part of your home. Ambient Display uses presence sensing to turn on your TV when someone enters the room or is detected near it.

When the TV isn't in use, it goes into Screensaver mode which shows your photos, artwork, and helpful information, turning your TV into a smart picture frame. When the Ambient Display setting is turned on and presence sensors don't detect movement, your TV screen automatically turns off.

Use presence sensing

To have your TV respond when you enter or leave the room, you can turn on Ambient Display.

Turn on your TV Through Presence Sensing

To turn on your TV screen, make sure the Ambient Display is on and there's motion within presence sensing distance. Your TV starts in Screensaver mode.

Tips:

    1. Select Screensaver settings and then Ambient Display and then Widgets settings.
    2. Turn on Display widgets.
  • To turn on your TV when presence sensing is off or your presence isn't detected, on the remote control, press Power or Home.
  • When your TV turns on while you're close to the TV and within presence sensing distance, it immediately shows the widgets you previously selected.

      • Make sure:
        • You haven't turned off the option to wake your TV.
        • Verify if you're outside of the quiet hours and that you're within the presence sensing distance.
      • To find these settings, select Screensaver settings and then Ambient Display.
    2. Unintentionally turns on: Check what may have woken up your TV.

Set When your TV Turns on

  2. Select System and then Ambient Screensaver and then Settings.
  3. Select Ambient Display.
  4. You can adjust these settings:

    • Quiet hours: Set up hours when the TV doesn't turn on.
      • When quiet hours end, your TV turns on again when it detects presence.
      • This setting is on by default and set to 10 PM to 7 AM.
    • Nighttime mode: Keep the TV from turning on in darkness.
      • This setting increases standby power use.
      • While in Ambient mode, your TV automatically turns off when it's dark.
      • Your TV turns on after presence is detected when it's bright.

Tip: To turn off the TV and presence detection, on the remote control, press and hold Power. This turns off the TV display and presence sensing until the TV is manually turned back on.

Turn off your TV through Presence Sensing

When presence sensing is on, your TV turns off after it stops detecting movement. When you actively play content, your TV turns off only after no presence has been detected for 4 hours.

  1. On your TV, go to Settings Settings.
  2. Select System and then Power & Energy and then Shut-Off Timer

    • To turn on the TV, on the remote control, press Power or Home.
  • If your TV:
    • Unintentionally turn off while you're present: Make sure you're within presence sensing distance.

Turn off the Adaptive Display

While in Screensaver mode, your TV screens's brightness adjusts automatically depending on how dark or bright your room is. To view your photos or widgets in Screensaver mode in higher brightness, turn off this setting.

Tips:

  • The screen dims in dark rooms.
  • This saves energy and matches the surroundings.

When you're close to the TV that's in Screensaver mode, you can set the widgets to automatically show and dismiss or disappear after 10 seconds. In the Ambient Display settings, you can adjust the distance that triggers the widgets to display or turn this feature on or off.

  • To manually open and close widgets when in Screensaver mode: On the remote control, press Up.
  • To return to Ambient mode: On the remote control, press Back or Down.

Tip: If you’re within presence sensing distance when your TV turns on, it immediately shows widgets.

Understand the presence detection limitations

To detect motion, Ambient Display uses radar signals. This motion detection technology is extremely sensitive. The TV radar signals can detect:

  • Moving objects: Fans, pets, curtains, or vacuums can trigger presence.
    • Your TV may turn on when motion is detected.
    • Your TV may not turn off automatically when in Ambient mode.
  • Walls and windows: Motion can be detected behind walls and windows.

Your TV may not detect movement due to:

  • Obstacles: The TV may not detect your presence if there are obstacles in the way of the radar signals.
  • TV placement: Do not place objects in front of the radar sensor at the bottom of the TV. Low or high TV placement can impact detection.
  • Distance: Presence is limited by the range of the sensor. The sensor may not detect movement further than 16 feet away from the TV. The range of the sensor may vary by TV brand or model.
  • Lack of movement: The presence detection may not detect moving objects close to the ground or movements that are too small.
