If your TCL Roku TV turns on and the picture looks normal, but you do not hear any sound, try the steps below. These steps can help determine whether the issue is related to the TV volume, an app, a connected device, or an audio setting.
1. Check the Volume and Mute Settings
Make sure the TV is not muted and the volume is not set too low.
Using your TCL Roku TV remote:
- Press Volume Up several times.
- Press Mute once to make sure mute is turned off.
- Confirm that the volume level appears on the screen and increases as expected.
2. Check Whether the Issue Happens Everywhere
Try audio from more than one source.
For example:
- Open more than one streaming app.
- Try a different movie, show, or video.
- Try Live TV or an antenna channel, if available.
- Try a connected HDMI device, if one is available.
If the sound issue only happens in one app, channel, or title, the app or content may be the cause. Try closing and reopening the app, choosing a different title, checking your internet connection, or restarting the TV.
3. Restart the TV
A restart can help clear temporary audio or app-related issues.
- Press Home on your Roku remote.
- Go to Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Power.
- Select System restart.
- Select Restart.
If you do not see Power in the menu, you may be able to restart the TV by unplugging it from the power outlet for about 30 seconds, then plugging it back in.
4. Check Connected Devices and Cables
If you are using a cable box, streaming device, game console, Blu-ray player, or another external device, check the following:
- Make sure the external device is powered on.
- Make sure the external device is not muted.
- Raise the volume using the external device’s remote, if applicable.
- Confirm that all cables are firmly connected on both ends.
- If using HDMI, try a different HDMI cable or a different HDMI port on the TV.
If you are using older red and white audio cables, make sure they are connected correctly:
- Red = Right audio
- White = Left audio
Some older video connections, such as component video, may require separate red and white audio cables for sound.
5. Check the TV Audio Settings
Make sure the TV is set to use the correct audio output.
- Press Home on your Roku remote.
- Go to Settings.
- Select Audio.
- Select Audio output.
- Choose the option that matches your setup.
For most customers using the TV speakers, select TV speakers or Auto when available.
If you are using a soundbar, receiver, or home theater system, make sure the TV is set to the correct audio output, such as HDMI ARC/eARC or Optical, depending on how the device is connected.
Note: Menu options and labels may vary by TCL Roku TV model and Roku OS version.
6. Check Soundbar or Receiver Settings, If Used
If you are using an external audio device, such as a soundbar, receiver, or home theater system:
- Make sure the device is turned on.
- Make sure it is set to the correct input.
- Confirm that the volume is turned up.
- Make sure the cable from the TV to the audio device is fully connected.
- If using HDMI ARC/eARC, confirm that the HDMI cable is connected to the HDMI ARC/eARC port on the TV.
7. Try a Software Update
Keeping the TV software up to date may help resolve performance or audio-related issues.
- Press Home on your Roku remote.
- Go to Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Software update.
- Select Check now.
If an update is available, follow the on-screen instructions to install it.
