Closed captioning (subtitles) can usually be turned on directly inside each streaming app. The exact steps can vary by app and by TV or streaming device, but the options are almost always found under Subtitles, CC, or Audio & Subtitles while a video is playing.
Below are general steps for the most popular apps.
Please Note: Steps may vary.
Before you start
- Make sure your app is up to date.
- Make sure you’re signed in to your account.
- Start playing a movie, show, or episode before looking for subtitle options (most apps only show CC/subtitles while something is playing).
Netflix
- Open Netflix and play a movie or TV show.
- On your remote, press the button that opens playback options (often OK/Enter, Up, or Down on the D-pad).
- Look for Audio & Subtitles or a speech bubble / dialog icon.
- Select Subtitles (or Closed Captions) and choose your preferred language.
- Press Back or OK to return to your video. Subtitles should now appear.
- Tip: If subtitles don’t appear, try stopping playback and starting the video again.
Disney+
- Open Disney+ and start playing a movie or episode.
- Press Up or Down on your remote to open the playback controls.
- Select the Audio & Subtitles icon (usually a square speech bubble).
- Under Subtitles, choose the language you want (for example, English [CC]).
- Resume playback. Subtitles should now be visible.
Hulu
- Open Hulu and start a show or movie.
- Press Up, Down, or OK/Enter on your remote to bring up the playback menu.
- Find and select the Settings, CC, or Audio & Subtitles icon.
- Turn Subtitles/Closed Captions On and choose your language.
- Return to your video to confirm captions are showing.
Prime Video (Amazon)
- Open Prime Video and play a title.
- Press Up or Down to show the playback controls.
- Select the Subtitles or CC icon.
- Choose your preferred subtitle language.
- Resume playback with subtitles enabled.
Max, Apple TV+, and other apps
- Most other streaming apps use a similar process:
- Start playing a video.
- Open the playback controls (usually with OK/Enter, Up, or Down on the remote).
- Look for Subtitles, Closed Captions, CC, or Audio & Subtitles.
- Turn subtitles On and pick a language.
If closed captions still don’t appear
If you still don’t see captions after turning them on in the app:
- Try another title in the same app to see if the issue happens on all shows or just one.
- Restart the app (close it and open it again).
- Restart your TV/streaming device (turn it off, unplug it for 30 seconds, then plug it back in).
- Make sure the show or movie actually supports captions in your language (not all titles do).
If captions still won’t turn on after these steps, please contact our support team with:
- Your Televisions OS (or the device you are streaming from).
- The app name (Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, etc.)
- The show or movie title
- The season and episode (if it’s a series)
- A brief description of what happens when you try to turn captions on
We’ll be happy to help you further.
