TV Is On, but There Is No Picture or Sound

If your TCL TV is powered on but you do not see a picture or hear sound, the TV may be on the wrong input, the connected device may be off, the cable may be loose, or the TV may need a restart.

Note: Menu names and directions may vary by model, remote type, and software version.

1. Confirm the TV Is Powered On

Make sure the TV is actually on and not in standby mode.

  1. Check that the power light is on, if your model has one.
  2. Press the Power button on the remote.
  3. Try pressing the physical Power button on the TV.
  4. If the screen is black, look closely to see if the screen lights up at all.

If the TV does not appear to power on, troubleshoot the power connection first.

2. Check the Input or Source

The TV may be set to an input that does not have a device connected.

  1. Press the Input or Source button on the remote.
  2. Select the input where your device is connected, such as HDMI 1, HDMI 2, HDMI 3, Live TV, or Antenna.
  3. Wait a few seconds after selecting the input.
  4. If there is still no picture or sound, try another input.

If you are using a cable box, gaming console, streaming device, Blu-ray player, or soundbar, make sure that device is powered on.

3. Check the Connected Device

If the issue happens only when using an external device, the TV may be working normally.

  1. Make sure the external device is turned on.
  2. Confirm the device is not in sleep or standby mode.
  3. Try using the device’s original remote to wake it up.
  4. Restart the connected device.
  5. Try connecting the device to a different HDMI port on the TV.

Examples of external devices include cable boxes, satellite boxes, gaming consoles, streaming devices, Blu-ray players, HDMI switches, and soundbars.

4. Check the Cables

A loose or damaged cable can cause no picture, no sound, or both.

  1. Turn off the TV and connected device.
  2. Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI, coaxial, antenna, optical, or audio cable.
  3. Make sure each cable is firmly connected.
  4. Try a different cable, if available.
  5. Avoid using HDMI splitters, adapters, or extension cables while troubleshooting.

For HDMI devices, make sure the HDMI cable is connected directly from the device to the TV.

5. Try a Different Channel, App, or Input

The issue may be with one channel, app, or source instead of the TV.

  1. Change to a different channel.
  2. Open a different app.
  3. Switch to another input.
  4. Try the TV’s Home screen or menu.

If the menu or Home screen appears, the TV display is working, and the issue is likely related to the channel, app, input, cable, or connected device.
