Troubleshooting TV and TCL Sound Bar Connection Issues

If your TV is not connecting to your TCL sound bar, or if you are not hearing sound from the sound bar, try the steps below in order.

1. Confirm How the Sound Bar Is Connected

First, check which connection type you are using.

Common sound bar connection types include:

Connection Type What to Check
HDMI ARC / eARC The HDMI cable should be connected to the HDMI ARC/eARC port on both the TV and the sound bar.
Optical The optical cable should be fully inserted into both the TV and sound bar.
Bluetooth The TV and sound bar must be paired through the TV’s Bluetooth settings.

Make sure the cable is firmly connected and plugged into the correct port. If using HDMI ARC/eARC, a regular HDMI port may not send audio to the sound bar.

2. Set the Sound Bar to the Correct Input

The sound bar needs to be on the same input as the connection you are using.

For example:

  • If using HDMI ARC/eARC, set the sound bar to HDMI ARC.
  • If using Optical, set the sound bar to Optical.
  • If using Bluetooth, set the sound bar to Bluetooth.
  • Use the sound bar remote or buttons on the sound bar to change the input/source.

3. Check the TV Audio Output Settings

Next, make sure the TV is sending sound to the sound bar.

On the TV, open the sound or audio settings and select the correct audio output.

Choose the option that matches your connection:

  • HDMI ARC/eARC
  • Optical / Digital Audio Out
  • Bluetooth
  • External Speakers / Audio System

Menu names may vary depending on your TV model and operating system.

4. Turn On HDMI ARC/eARC and CEC if Using HDMI

If your sound bar is connected with HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC, the TV may need ARC/eARC and CEC turned on.

CEC may also be called:

  • CEC
  • HDMI Control
  • T-Link
  • Anynet+
  • Simplink
  • Bravia Sync
  • Viera Link

After turning these settings on, test the sound again.

5. Restart the TV and Sound Bar

  • A quick restart can often fix connection or audio handoff issues.
  • Turn off the TV and sound bar.
  • Unplug both devices from power.
  • Wait about 30 seconds.
  • Plug the sound bar back in first.
  • Plug the TV back in.
  • Turn both devices on and test the sound.

6. Try a Different App, Channel, or Device

Check whether the issue happens everywhere or only with one source.

Try:

  • A different streaming app
  • A different TV channel
  • A different HDMI device
  • The TV’s built-in apps
  • If the sound works in some places but not others, the issue may be related to that specific app, device, or audio format.

7. Try a Different Cable

If you are using HDMI ARC/eARC or Optical, try another cable if available.

A damaged or loose cable can cause:

  • No sound
  • Audio cutting in and out
  • The sound bar not being detected
  • Volume control issues
  • For HDMI ARC/eARC, make sure the HDMI cable is fully seated and connected to the correct ARC/eARC ports.

8. Check Bluetooth Pairing, if Using Bluetooth

If using Bluetooth:

  • Make sure the sound bar is in Bluetooth pairing mode.
  • Make sure the TV is searching for Bluetooth audio devices.
  • Disconnect or turn off other nearby Bluetooth devices that may already be connected to the sound bar.
  • Remove the sound bar from the TV’s Bluetooth device list, then pair it again.
  • Bluetooth performance can vary depending on distance, interference, and TV compatibility.

9. Check for Software Updates

Software updates can improve device compatibility and fix audio issues.

Check for updates on:

  • The TV
  • The TCL sound bar, if supported by the model
  • After updating, restart both devices and test again.

10. Confirm Compatibility

  • Most TVs and TCL sound bars work together using HDMI ARC/eARC, Optical, or Bluetooth. However, available features can vary by TV brand, model, and connection type.
  • For example, some features may only work with HDMI ARC/eARC, such as:
  • TV remote volume control
  • Powering the sound bar on or off with the TV
  • Higher-quality audio formats

If the sound bar still does not work after trying the steps above, try connecting it with another available method, such as Optical instead of HDMI ARC, to help narrow down the issue.
