How to Troubleshoot a TV That Will Not Power On

If your TCL TV will not turn on, there are a few simple steps you can try before requesting service. In many cases, the issue may be related to the power connection, remote control, wall outlet, or a temporary system lockup.

Use the steps below based on your TCL TV operating system: Google TV, Roku TV, or Fire TV.

Before You Begin

  • No matter which TCL TV you have, start with these basic checks:
  • Make sure the power cord is securely connected to the TV and the wall outlet.
  • If your TV has a removable power cord, unplug it from both the TV and the wall, then reconnect both ends firmly.
  • Make sure the wall outlet is working by plugging in another device, such as a lamp or phone charger.
  • If the TV is connected to a power strip, surge protector, or extension cord, plug the TV directly into a wall outlet.
  • Try turning the TV on using the physical power button on the TV instead of the remote.
  • Replace the batteries in the remote and make sure they are installed correctly.

TCL Google TV No Power Troubleshooting

Step 1: Power Cycle the TV

  • A power cycle can help clear temporary power or software issues.
  • Unplug the TV from the wall outlet.
  • Leave the TV unplugged for at least 60 seconds.
  • While the TV is unplugged, press and hold the physical power button on the TV for about 15 seconds, if available.
  • Plug the TV directly back into the wall outlet.
  • Press the Power button on the TV or remote.

Step 2: Check the Remote Control

  • If the TV does not turn on with the remote, try using the power button on the TV.
  • If the TV turns on using the button on the TV, replace the remote batteries.
  • Make sure nothing is blocking the front of the TV.
  • Move closer to the TV and press Power again.
  • Some TCL Google TV remotes use Bluetooth or voice features. If the TV powers on but the remote does not fully respond, the remote may need to be paired again from the TV settings.

Step 3: Disconnect External Devices

  • A connected device can sometimes prevent the TV from starting correctly.
  • Unplug the TV from power.
  • Disconnect HDMI devices, USB drives, soundbars, cable boxes, game consoles, and streaming devices.
  • Plug the TV back in.
  • Try turning it on again.
  • If the TV powers on, reconnect devices one at a time to identify the device that may have caused the issue.

Step 4: Check for Signs of Power

  • Look for signs that the TV is receiving power, such as:
  • A standby light turning on or blinking
  • The screen briefly lighting up
  • The Google TV startup screen appearing
  • A startup sound or click from the TV
  • If the TV shows signs of power but the screen stays black, the issue may be related to picture or display rather than no power.

TCL Roku TV No Power Troubleshooting

Step 1: Power Cycle the TV

  • Unplug the TV from the wall outlet.
  • Leave it unplugged for at least 60 seconds.
  • While unplugged, press and hold the physical power button on the TV for about 15 seconds, if available.
  • Plug the TV directly into a wall outlet.
  • Press the Power button on the TV or Roku remote.

Step 2: Check the Roku TV Remote

  • If the TV does not respond to the remote, try turning the TV on using the power button located on the TV.
  • If the TV turns on using the TV’s power button, replace the batteries in the Roku remote.
  • Make sure the batteries are installed correctly.
  • Move closer to the TV and press Power again.
  • If your Roku remote has a pairing button or voice button, it may need to be paired again after the TV powers on.

Step 3: Disconnect External Devices

  • Unplug the TV from power.
  • Disconnect all HDMI devices, USB drives, cable boxes, game consoles, soundbars, and other connected equipment.
  • Plug the TV back in.
  • Try powering it on.
  • If the TV turns on, reconnect each device one at a time.

Step 4: Check for Signs of Power

  • Look for the standby light on the front or bottom area of the TV.
  • Check whether the screen briefly lights up or shows the TCL or Roku startup screen.
  • Listen for any sound or click when pressing Power.
  • If the TV powers on but shows a black screen, the issue may not be a no-power issue and may require picture troubleshooting.

TCL Fire TV No Power Troubleshooting

Step 1: Power Cycle the TV

  • Unplug the TV from the wall outlet.
  • Leave the TV unplugged for at least 60 seconds.
  • While the TV is unplugged, press and hold the physical power button on the TV for about 15 seconds, if available.
  • Plug the TV directly back into a wall outlet.
  • Press the Power button on the TV or Fire TV remote.

Step 2: Check the Fire TV Remote

  • If the TV does not respond to the remote, try the physical power button on the TV.
  • If the TV turns on using the TV’s power button, replace the remote batteries.
  • Make sure the batteries are installed correctly.
  • Move closer to the TV and try again.
  • If the TV powers on but the remote does not respond, the Fire TV remote may need to be paired again.

Step 3: Disconnect External Devices

  • Unplug the TV from power.
  • Disconnect HDMI devices, USB drives, cable boxes, game consoles, soundbars, and any other connected devices.
  • Plug the TV back into the wall outlet.
  • Try turning it on again.
  • If the TV turns on, reconnect external devices one at a time to help find the source of the issue.

Step 4: Check for Signs of Power

  • Look for a standby or power light on the TV.
  • Check whether the screen briefly lights up or shows the TCL or Fire TV startup screen.
  • Listen for any sound or click from the TV when pressing Power.
  • If the TV appears to turn on but does not show a picture, the issue may be related to the screen, input, or picture settings rather than power.

If the TV Still Will Not Power On

  • Try a different working wall outlet.
  • Avoid using a power strip, surge protector, or extension cord while testing.
  • Make sure the power cord is not damaged.
  • Check whether the TV is showing any lights, sounds, or screen activity.
  • If there are no signs of power after completing these steps, service may be needed.

Additional Notes

  • Directions may vary by TCL TV model and software version.
  • The physical power button location may vary. It is commonly found on the bottom, back, side, or underside of the TV.
