How to Check for Software Updates on Your TCL TV

Keeping your TCL TV updated helps ensure you have the latest available features, performance improvements, security updates, and bug fixes. This article applies to TCL TVs sold in North America, including TCL Google TV, TCL Roku TV, and TCL Fire TV models.

Before You Start

Make sure your TV is connected to the internet before checking for updates.

For the best results:

  • Keep the TV powered on during the update.
  • Do not unplug the TV while an update is downloading or installing.
  • Use a strong Wi-Fi connection, or connect the TV with Ethernet if your model supports it.
  • Allow the TV to restart if prompted.
  • After the update is complete, check the software update screen again to confirm there are no additional updates available.

Menu names may vary slightly depending on your TV model and current software version.

If the TV Will Not Update

If the update does not start, fails, or seems stuck, try the steps below.

1. Check the Internet Connection

Make sure your TV is connected to the internet.

If using Wi-Fi:

  • Confirm the TV is connected to the correct network.
  • Make sure the Wi-Fi password is correct.
  • Move the router closer to the TV, if possible.
  • Restart your modem/router by unplugging it for about 30 seconds, then plugging it back in.

If your TV supports Ethernet, try connecting the TV directly to the router with an Ethernet cable.

2. Restart the TV

Restarting the TV may clear temporary system issues.

To restart the TV:

  1. Turn the TV off.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  3. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  4. Plug the TV back in.
  5. Turn the TV on.
  6. Try checking for the update again.

3. Make Sure the TV Has Enough Time to Complete the Update

Some updates may take several minutes to download and install. The TV may also restart during the process.

Do not unplug the TV while the update is in progress.

4. Try Again Later

If the update server is temporarily unavailable or the internet connection is unstable, the update may fail. Wait a short time, then try checking for the update again.

5. Contact TCL Support

If your TV still cannot update, contact TCL Support for additional assistance. Please have the following information ready:

  • TV model number
  • TV serial number
  • Current software version, if available
  • A description of what happens when you try to update
  • Any error message shown on the screen

You can usually find the model and serial number on the label on the back of the TV or in the TV’s settings menu.

Important Notes

  • Software updates are released by model and platform, so not all TCL TVs receive the same update at the same time.
  • If your TV says it is up to date, there may not be a newer update available for your specific model yet.
  • Do not install software files from unofficial websites.
  • Only use update methods provided through the TV menu or directly by TCL Support.
  • Factory resetting the TV is not normally required to check for or install a software update.
