How to Prevent and Clean Mold in Window Air Conditioners

Mold or mildew can sometimes develop inside a window air conditioner, especially when moisture, dust, and dirt build up inside the unit. Keeping the air conditioner clean and properly drained can help reduce the chance of mold growth and help the unit run more effectively.

Why Mold Can Grow in a Window AC

Window air conditioners naturally collect moisture while cooling the room. If dust, dirt, or standing water collects inside the unit, it can create an environment where mold or mildew may grow.

Common causes include:

  • Moisture sitting inside the unit
  • A dirty or clogged air filter
  • Dust or debris on internal parts
  • Poor drainage
  • High humidity in the room
  • The unit being stored or covered while still damp

How to Help Prevent Mold

Clean the Air Filter Regularly

A dirty filter can trap dust and moisture, which may contribute to mold or mildew.

  • Turn the air conditioner off.
  • Remove the front panel or filter cover.
  • Take out the air filter.
  • Vacuum loose dust and debris.
  • If the filter is washable, rinse it with warm water and mild soap.
  • Allow the filter to dry completely before reinstalling it.
  • Do not reinstall a wet filter. This can add moisture back into the unit.

Keep the Front Grille and Vents Clean

Dust can collect around the vents and front grille over time.

  • Wipe the outside of the unit with a soft, damp cloth.
  • Use mild soap and water if needed.
  • Do not spray water directly into the control panel or electrical areas.

Check for Proper Drainage

Window air conditioners remove moisture from the air, and that water needs to drain correctly.

  • Make sure the unit is installed securely.
  • The unit should be positioned so water can drain toward the outside.
  • Check that the drain area is not blocked by dirt, leaves, or debris.
  • Standing water inside the unit can increase the chance of mold or mildew.

Reduce Room Humidity

High indoor humidity can make mold growth more likely.

When possible:

  • Use a dehumidifier in damp rooms.
  • Keep windows and doors closed while the AC is running.
  • Use exhaust fans in nearby bathrooms, laundry rooms, or kitchens.
  • Avoid running the unit in Fan Only mode for long periods in very humid conditions.

Store or Cover the Unit Properly

When the air conditioner is not being used for a long period of time:

  • Clean the filter and exterior surfaces.
  • Allow the unit to dry completely.
  • Cover the outside portion of the unit if it will remain installed.
  • Store removable units in a dry location.
  • Do not cover or store the unit while it is still damp.

What to Do if You See Mold or Mildew

  • If you notice mold or mildew on the filter, front grille, or other accessible areas, clean the unit before using it again.
  • Turn off and unplug the air conditioner.
  • Wear gloves, eye protection, and a mask while cleaning.
  • Remove and clean the air filter.
  • Wipe accessible surfaces with warm water and mild detergent.
  • For stubborn mildew odors or spots, a mixture of water and white vinegar may help.
  • Gently scrub affected areas with a soft brush or cloth.
  • Allow all cleaned parts to dry completely before reinstalling them.
  • Plug the unit back in only after everything is fully dry.
  • Do not use harsh chemicals, bleach, or abrasive cleaners unless specifically recommended in your product manual.
